Preparing for your Goldendoodle puppy or Standard Poodle puppy can feel like a lot, and you may not know where to start. This blog is to give some guidance on some of the best things to buy, prepare and set up before bringing home your new family member.
You are going to need many things but you are also going to need some designated space in the house for your pup. Usually, this consists of a cozy corner for their crate, a place for their food and water bowls and a place for a dog bed, especially when they are a bit older.
It's always fun choosing their collar or harness & leash and picking out toys. Of course, they need food bowls, a crate, grooming tools, training supplies and a good quality food.
Here is our list of must-haves prior to picking up your puppy:
Food (Purina Pro Plan Large Breed Puppy), we also suggest using this for training and treats
Crumps or Zukes for treats, freeze-dried liver treats are also a good option as they are all natural
Food and water bowls
Leash and collar (try to stick to flat collar rather than harness - size small or x-small, 9 or 10in at smallest size)
Brush (slicker brush & metal comb)
Toys (Winners is my favourite place for puppy toys!)
Crate and/or bed - we use 36in x 24/25in wide crate, with a divider that you can move as they grow (these are recommended to provide a safe place for the puppy and a place where he/she can go to relax/calm down)
Something we know about our dogs is that they usually have strong chewing needs, as many dogs do. Giving them appropriate chewing items is important to ensure they do not resort to chewing furniture, shoes or other items. Dirty underwear, socks, feminine hygiene products & dirty diapers are all items we have found to be favourites of our dogs. Having a garbage container that is elevated or with a lid, as well as a tall laundry basket can help avoid them finding these things.
Here are some tips for playing with your puppy & some toy suggestions:
Rope chew toys, balls and Kongs are all great options.
Planet Dog is a great and tough brand which can be purchased online, just google Planet Dog Canada for options.
Squeaky noise toys can be used to get the pup’s attention but the pup may destroy them so please use these toys only while they are being supervised to avoid the squeaker being choked on.
Do not choose toys that may resemble an item that will be off limits (shoes).
When playing or giving attention, touch the pup everywhere. This will help the pup to remain comfortable especially while being groomed.
Encourage quiet time after play.
Chewing rubber bones and bullysticks should be supervised.
